Building Regulations

Summary:
Building Regulations set out the technical requirements that need to be met and the procedures that need to be followed to ensure the health and safety of people, and the water and energy efficiency of buildings. They apply to most new buildings and alterations of existing buildings (whether domestic, commercial or industrial).
 
Key Requirements:
The technical requirements that need to be met cover:

Dangerous and offensive substances;
Subsoil drainage;
Foul water drainage and cesspools, septic tanks and settlement tanks;
Solid waste storage; and
Conservation of fuel and power (these energy efficient standards differ according to the size in square metres of the building).

Non compliance with the building regulations may be by not following the correct building procedures and/or carrying out building work which does not comply with the technical requirements.
Penalties & Implications of non-compliance:

The local authority is responsible for enforcement and may impose a fine of up to £5000 for the contravention and up to £50 for each day the contravention continues after conviction.
